5 Famous Face Mask Myths
Who would have thought that there will come a time when wearing masks would be considered mandatory and anyone not complying by the rules will have to pay a hefty amount as a penalty? A few months ago covering your face with a mask would have got you strange stares, particularly in the countries that are not accustomed to this unusual behavior. However, things have pretty much changed now. Since the governments all over the world are easing their lock down to stabilize their economy, wearing masks in public has become compulsory. The experts are constantly reminding the general public to ensure their own and their loved one's safety by maintaining social distancing and taking all the preventive measures.
Despite presenting loads of
information about coronavirus necessary precautions and how you can stay safe,
there are still various myths circulating. The most startling and mind-boggling
tale is the doubt about the existence of the virus. There are still some people
who think no such virus exists and it is just a hoax to create nuisance in the
society. However, these myths are not only restricted to its existence, but
many fictional stories are flowing regarding the face masks as well. Let's move
forward and discuss those myths.
1)
Only Infected people Wear Masks
There is this myth travelling around
that not everybody needs to wear head
loop masks or other types of mask. They believe only the ones who are
infected by it and the health workers should wear it. Just because you are
still not contaminated by it does not mean you can never be. The research says,
40% of the patients did not observe any symptoms before. You never know if you
are suffering from the infection or not until you get tested. So wear the mask
and practice social distancing it is not that difficult.
2)
Social Distancing is Enough
Every other day people surprise you
with their new theory, some people believe if they are social distancing they
do not need to wear a mask, which is not true. It's not an either and or game;
you have to do both. Wearing a mask is just the first step in slackening the
spread of the virus. Social distancing and wearing masks, both are equally
important for your safety.
3)
You Breathe in More Carbon Dioxide
When you wear the mask, it covers the
nose bridge completely and does not leave any space on the sides as well, which
wholly covers your mouth and nose. It eventually does not leave any space for
the carbon dioxide to pass through; hence you breath in the intoxicated gas
[it’s a myth]. Nevertheless, WHO research states that wearing face masks for
prolonged hours does not lead to a lack of oxygen and carbon dioxide
intoxication. So it's pretty safe to wear face masks and you can also get reusable Cloth Face Masks in the USA as
they are less annoying and comfier. However, if you feel woozy, then I
recommend you to stay hydrated as masks make drinking water more difficult.
4)
Only N95s are Effective
There was an upsurge in the sale of
N95 masks in the beginning which later caused difficulties for the healthcare
workers to get their hands on them. There was this fable which stated no other
masks are as effective as N95, which is completely untrue. In fact, N95 masks
are only for the healthcare workers and for those who come in contact with the
patient directly. It is recommended to the general public to keep these masks
reserved for the needed people only.
5) Cloth Masks are Useless
Earlier at the beginning of the pandemic, this myth was understandable as everything was new for the health workers and the experts. However, now since the internet and our social applications are filled with the coronavirus news, it is quite surprising to hold such beliefs still. Cloth masks are as effective as the other masks since they blockade the respiratory droplets to enter into the hood. However, covering your face with the piece of cloth only is not enough; you should make a proper mask and slip it on your face.
